"Growing up Southern is a privilege, really. It's more than where you're born; it's an idea and state of mind that seems imparted at birth. It's more than loving fried chicken, sweet tea, football, and country music. It’s being hospitable, devoted to front porches, magnolias, moon pies, coca-cola... and each other. We don't become Southern - we're born that way." - Unknown

counting down

Seeing that it's November and my wedding is getting closer and closer, I figured I should probably tell you how we're managing the countdown to the big day. We haven't been counting down days (though I'll probably start once we get down to about twenty or so). Rather, we've been measuring time with expiration dates on food. Any time we go grocery shopping, we search the store to find the food that has expiration dates around 18 December. We've even found things that expire on the very day we're getting married. We're slowly progressing toward more perishable foods. Currently we are on refrigerated Jello cups, fancy (Milano) cookies, store-brand pastrami, and a random jar of honey mustard that we found. It's so much fun counting down this way because we aren't getting caught up in the number of days. (I'm a firm believer that counting days makes time go by slower, and who wants that?) We're excited for when we're finally on meat and milk and bread, and other really perishable foods. Also, any time we find an expiration date for 18 December, we buy that item. We're saving the labels and are going to make a collage out of them with a wedding picture, as well as clippings from newspapers that have our wedding date on them.

I love it. What a uniquely Alyssa thing to do to "count down" the days.

I love it too! I will probably be extremely busy with wedding hoopla when you are finding that date on the perishables!
