"We die. That may be the meaning of life. But we do language.
That may be the measure of our lives." - Toni Morrison

"Growing up Southern is a privilege, really. It's more than where you're born; it's an idea and state of mind that seems imparted at birth. It's more than loving fried chicken, sweet tea, football, and country music. It’s being hospitable, devoted to front porches, magnolias, moon pies, coca-cola... and each other. We don't become Southern - we're born that way." - Unknown

Meet my good friend, Toni Morrison.

This is Toni:
Doesn't she just look wise?
(spoiler: she is)

Have you ever read anything by her?
If you haven't, stop what you're doing, go to the nearest bookstore, buy one of her novels, and read it.
It doesn't matter which one you pick up. They're all brilliant.
She's brilliant.
She won the Pulitzer Prize and the Nobel Prize for literature. She is my favorite living author (and perhaps favorite author ever).

To get you started (say, if you're busy and can't leave immediately to go get a book) read this. And listen to it, too. It's absolutely worth your time. Her voice is perfect for storytelling. The links are to her Nobel lecture. It is incredible, and all about language.
I also love the fact that she begins her Nobel lecture with
"Once upon a time..."

She DOES have a wonderful narrative voice! If I didn't have to go to work this morning I'd be heading to Books A Million!

I keep putting her on a back burner. I think all the hype with the Oprah books has kind of turned me off her. I'm not sure why. Maybe because the Oprah books I've read (while well written) didn't speak to me that much. I'll have to put one of her books on my TBR list and see what I think.
