"Growing up Southern is a privilege, really. It's more than where you're born; it's an idea and state of mind that seems imparted at birth. It's more than loving fried chicken, sweet tea, football, and country music. It’s being hospitable, devoted to front porches, magnolias, moon pies, coca-cola... and each other. We don't become Southern - we're born that way." - Unknown

i'm ready for summer.

Dear Mother Nature,

I'd like one good afternoon thunderstorm, please. Heavy on the downpour, and make it warm. Also, extra thunder and lightning on the side. Thanks.

Yours,
A.

There's nothing like a good thunderstorm. I wouldn't mind one either, especially if I could order it on an afternoon that I don't need to go anywhere. Ah. To hunker down with a good book while the storm rages!

My favorite: A thunderstorm rolls through in the late afternoon, then opens up to a clear sky at dusk, while the storm moves away in the distance you can see the lightning illuminating the thunderheads from the inside and the lightning dancing across the dark clouds. (All of this in silence and the smell of fresh new rain.) Nice.

Very poetic, Sterling. So vivid.
