That may be the measure of our lives." - Toni Morrison

"Growing up Southern is a privilege, really. It's more than where you're born; it's an idea and state of mind that seems imparted at birth. It's more than loving fried chicken, sweet tea, football, and country music. It’s being hospitable, devoted to front porches, magnolias, moon pies, coca-cola... and each other. We don't become Southern - we're born that way." - Unknown

just one more reason why i hate snow...

Today I was supposed to fly back to SLC, and right now I'm supposed to in the car driving back to Provo. Long story short, I'm not.

One snow storm in Memphis delayed my five pm departure from Charlotte to six forty-five pm, thus missing my connecting flight in Tennessee by a long shot {even factoring in the time change}. Then, the announcement came that anyone who is going to miss their connection {the whole plane minus about six} needed to get in line for a rebook. Why they only had one worker at the station at my gate, I'll never know, but I stood in that line for over two hours. One of the low points of the line adventure was when I listened to Abbey Road in its entirety {not the bad part; I love that album} but didn't take a single step. Upside of the line: I met a really nice lady named Edy who is from Seattle, but lives in Switzerland, and loves David Sedaris about as much as I do. We had quite a bit to talk about.

The flight to Memphis left, with me still in line because I figured it would be better to be stranded closer to home. I finally got to the front of the line, and guess what? There were no flights to Salt Lake tonight. Oh, joy. But rather than being stuck in the airport for the whole night, my dad's cousin, Lisa, came and rescued me from the airport. We ate at a really fun hole-in-the-wall burger place called the Penguin Drive-In. It's a total dive, but had good food and is a great place to people watch. Then she took me back to her house in Charlotte where her yellow lab, Spencer, grabbed my last muffin out of my purse, and was so over-excited {possessed} to see another person, he had to be put in his kennel. Other than that, I made instant friends with Don and Pasco {two of her five cats}. I sat on the couch and immediately found Pasco on my lap and purring; which is exactly what I needed at that moment. And oh yes, there's also a parrot shouting out random things around the corner from my room.

Not exactly how I expected my day to end, but it's all an adventure and makes for some great stories to tell later. Huzzah for family {especially big extended ones like mine}, and for friends who are willing to come get me from the airport. My flight leaves Charlotte tomorrow morning at eight twenty. I have a layover in Atlanta, and assuming everything goes as planned, I should be in Salt Lake around one pm. Here's hoping the craziness of my adventure is over.

Well, the good news is, eating at The Penguin or being anywhere in East Charlotte is usually a good thing, not a bad one. I really, really hope you had a sweet tea, fried pickles, and a black bean burger, but if you didn't, I'll forgive you. Just this once. :-P

Have a safe flight back to SLC!! :-)

For whatever reason I started reading in the middle of your post instead of the beginning...

Spencer, grabbed my last muffin out of my purse, and was so over-excited {possessed} to see another person, he had to be put in his kennel.

I read that part five times before I read the sentence before it and realized you were talking about a dog, not your boyfriend.

Lisa's the best! I love her. I'm glad you got a chance to spend some time with her and her menagerie. Smart move to not get stuck in Memphis. No family there.

Lauren's comment totally cracked me up. LOL! I can just picture Spencer attacking your purse for the last muffin.
