day of days

As I sit here in my room, having just returned from the pool, I can't help but be thankful that we live in peace.

Sixty-five years ago, on this day, the Allied forces launched a major attack on the Axis powers. Despite being extremely vulnerable on the beaches, missing their drop zones, losing their leg bags which held all supplies, and suffering nearly 10,000 casualties, the battle resulted in an Allied victory.

Those men, especially the 101st Airborne Division, are my heroes. The 101st holds a very special place in my heart. I have so much respect for them, and am a much better person for knowing their story. As I remember and honor those men today, and all they went through for this country, I wonder how those veterans who are still living are spending today. Are they remembering their actions, or are the memories too painful to relive? Do they realize the impact of their story on this twenty year-old? That it has changed my life?
If I could have one wish come true right now, it would be to shake hands with any of the remaining members of the 101st,
and simply tell them 'thank you'.
