"Growing up Southern is a privilege, really. It's more than where you're born; it's an idea and state of mind that seems imparted at birth. It's more than loving fried chicken, sweet tea, football, and country music. It’s being hospitable, devoted to front porches, magnolias, moon pies, coca-cola... and each other. We don't become Southern - we're born that way." - Unknown

yet another crack in my armor against snow

On Monday I learned how to ski. Sort of. I learned the basic, "this is how you turn," "this is how you stop". Right after my friend taught me the correct way to fall over so I wouldn't break my legs (legs together and straight; fall to the side) he asked me if I remembered how to fall the right way. I said yes, repeated how to do it, then was promptly pushed over. After that, I got to hold onto a loop at the end of a rope while he pulled me around on the flat-ish ground so I could get the feel of being on skis. He made me stop him from running (while he pulled me) by using my amazing knowledge of stopping on skis that he bewstowed upon me. Next, I learned how to use the poles, how to put on and take of skis on a slope, and how to start and stop on a slope. Then I was turned loose to ski down a very, very, very small hill that probably doesn't even count as a hill. After taking my skis off for the last time, and the many discoveries of multiple muscles in my lower body I never knew existed, we had a snowball fight. I do believe that I may even want to try skiing again sometime. And here's an interesting tidbit: me, the South Carolinian, has learned how to ski before one of my Utahn roommates. How's that for irony?

I'd like to reiterate how much I absolutely love delightful, late-night conversations. They are always, inevitably the best ones.

I LOVE skiing. It was one of my favorite things about going to school out in UT. It is some of the best skiing anywhere. You should take advantage of it while you are there.

The first time I skied, I fell a pretty good bit, but it was still such a rush. I could see that if I didn't fall it would be FUN! The next time I went I hardly fell at all and had a blast and every time after that.

Late-night convos are the best!
